Out of State Mormons Just Gave $3 Million More
to End Marriage Equality in California
New Mormon total = $22 Million
A powerful appeal for marriage equality from a conservative Republican:
Barack Obama:
"You know, I've stated my opposition to [Proposition 8]."
"I think [Proposition 8] is unnecessary."
In addition to expressing his opposition to Proposition 8, Obama said he believes and
supports "strong civil unions ... that provide legal rights to same-sex couples [so] that
they can visit each other in the hospital if they get sick, [so] they can transfer property
to each other. If they've got benefits, they can make sure those benefits apply to their
partners. I think that's the direction we need to go in ...
... and that's the kind of politics I want to practice."
(interview is preceded by a 30-second ad)
Meanwhile, opponents of equality release urgent last-minute
instructions to Yes on 8 campaign supporters: "Get Mad."
And all the while, too many members of the Mormon church continue
to disregard this great advice from a faithful Mormon blogger:
“When you use the notion of religious faithfulness as a weapon
to enforce political uniformity, you distort the nature of religion,
you bruise the message of the gospel, and ...
you make our church look like a cult.”
If you think depriving your
fellow citizens of their civil rights
makes you some kind of Captain Moroni:
Congratulations, you're a nutjob.

Wow!
Over-the-top sites like
http://RavagedFaces.com/ (I wonder who put up a site like that?) which suggest that this is an attempt to legalize Polygamy and Incest get indirect mention in that SLC Tribune editorial .
While RavagedFaces argument is a little silly...there's a grain of truth to it. How many months have courts argued over commas in legislation? Changing definitions is dangerous!
"But California bloggers speculate that the church's support is really a ploy to legalize polygamy. After all, the thinking goes, the initiative language says "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." But what about one man and two women? "
Yeah, I read that piece in the Trib earlier today and caught that mention.
Never expected to see that particular bit of speculation get reported in the Trib of all places. Too funny.
I get the sense, from having read many LDS websites in the past few weeks, that there's a little bit of "Revenge" here. The logic is "You made us get rid of Polygamy...and now you're letting godless homosexuals marry? We won't stand for it!?
It was never said explicitly, but they keep bringing polygamy up, with a sense of longing for it....
I suspect that most of these cases of vandalism are self-inflicted. They're just too convenient.
Also, these Proposition 8 folks now worship "Yes on 8" signs! How many times were we warned about idolatry?
Hi there,
You commented on my very much outdated blog entry about my run-in with Sonja Brown. I want to first apologize for my adolescent self (of which I am quite embarrassed)and include the primary document of my encounter with Sonja Brown:
"Here's a run at it Marena.
Remember, it's more important to be heard, than to say nothing at all.
Sonja Brown"
Basic story: I was a senior in high school and had earned a place to speak at my graduation as valedictorian. I wrote a tongue-in-cheek speech, and she basically tried to threaten me with various things (i.e. not letting me graduate, taking away my opportunity to speak) in order to force me to read what would have essentially been a cookie-cutter infomercial for my high school.
After a rather unpleasant week and with the support of a lot of the staff at my high school, I was permitted to read my original speech.
I don't know if the text of the revised speech is so important, but I find it rather hilarious at a lot of points. If it's still of interest, please do reply to this comment, and I'll email it your way.
Also, I voted absentee a few weeks ago--no on Prop 8. Funny to find out who's behind the mess.
All best,
Marena Lin
Hi Marena,
Wow, it's really great to finally hear from you!
I'd love to turn your story into a post. If you have the original speech, the revised speech, and any other primary documents from that episode, they'd certainly help with making the post memorable.
That said, if you would be interested in writing the post yourself, by all means, I'd love to post it here and at the progressive blogs where I write, and you'd of course be credited as the author.
Thanks for dropping by, thank you for penning that original blog entry years ago, and whatever you decide you'd like to do, I wish you all the very best.
Warm regards,
Chino
Hi Chino:
It strikes me as indicative of how important it is that we vote Yes on 8, when I realize how deeply otherwise nice, sensible people have been indoctrinated by the No on 8 campaign to believe the following absurdity, which is essentially the distilled message $50 million bought you guys:
"if you support traditional marriage, then you are a bigot, a homophobe, and the kind of person who put the Japanese into internment camps."
Sheesh, Chino.
A six year old could have told you to save your money.
California isn't buying that malarkey.
See you in Irvine.
I guesstimate we will beat you by between 10 and 14 points.
Your friend,
Rick DeLano
Wow, look who else bought our "malarkey":
Brian Cahill, executive director of San Francisco Catholic Charities, has donated $500 to the No on Proposition 8 campaign, according to political contribution records on file with the California Secretary of State.
Cahill made the donation to “No on 8, Equality for All” on Aug. 5, the records revealed.
Looks like Cahill concluded, just as a slim majority of California voters have probably now concluded, that we were never and have never been a threat to traditional marriage.
No matter how much money you guys might spend trying to change the subject, you'll never change the reality of what this contest is really all about.
Hi Chino,
I'd love to put together a new post on that experience. I don't see any contact info on your blog, but you can contact me at marena.lin(at)gmail.com. Back in the day, livejournal used to forward me comments on the original post, and one relates to a personal confrontation a friend had with Sonja, in which Sonja asserted that eighteen year-olds should not have the right to vote.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you.
All best,
Marena
